Hedges for Shade | Hedges that Grow in Shade
"I need a privacy hedge, yet my yard gets plenty of shade. Is there anything I might improve? Hedges that grow in the shadow!
"I am desperate!"
Sounds familiar? This is a popular question, so you're not alone.
Shady places can pose particular issues. Some areas are quite dry, while others are quite damp. A hedge may be required to stretch through both full sun and full shade locations, and it must be capable of doing so effortlessly.
There are many wonderful hedges that grow in shade which are best suited to shady areas. There are many options for partial shade, although some people prefer heavy shade. The following are our top five favourite hedges for shade:
1. Schip laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’)
Cherry laurels normally require a lot of sun, but Schip laurels may tolerate moderate shade. Its glossy, broad, evergreen leaves offer a rich appearance in a gloomy area. It is also drought-tolerant, which makes it ideal for dry shade.
If you have a partially shaded property line and want privacy (green all year), cherry laurel is an excellent privacy tree that grows in shade. It is a rapid, upright grower that produces a tall, dense privacy screen.

Both are fast-growing (particularly Green Giant) and can endure a lot of shade. Both have a beautiful feathery texture and thrive in damp, well-drained soil. Going with separate privacy plants for shade also provides superb screening. Green giant is one of the best evergreens for growing in shade.
