What to Consider Before Planting Varieties of Hedges in your Garden

I want privacy in my garden. Installing fences could be quite expensive. This is a kind of question We all go through. Building fence in your garden area would not make any sense except privacy. For additional benefits, people in the USA plant hedges instead of installing fences in their backyard, garden. Natural things are always the best to consider. Especially when it’s about privacy and screening. Why building a fence, when you can get a beautiful hedge which can fulfill your needs (same like fence). Unlike fence, you get additional benefits when you plant hedges in your backyard.


Nowadays, People in the USA are planting varieties of hedges for privacy, screening. They are ideally placed to get shade in their garden area. Some of them use hedges for a landscaping purpose too, where they plant varieties of hedges. Since you are planning to plant varieties of hedges in your garden area for landscaping, it is essential to select hedges smartly. You can’t go with any hedge variety without knowing it’s basic specification. Hedges which are supposed to be planted in zone 5 cannot be installed in zone 8. Weather conditions, soil nature plays vital role for hedge to look beautifully. Below are some key points you must consider before planting hedge in your area- 


  • Type of Soil- First determine the type of soil in your area. Before planting a hedge in your garden area you must see which type of soil your garden has. Hedges like boxwood, cherry laurels are easy to grow in well drained soil. These hedges cannot be grown in extremely moist soil as it won’t allow water to be drained properly.

  • Weather Conditions- hedges can’t be grown anywhere. Some varieties asks for partial shade to perform good. They are not supposed to be planted in full sun. On the contrary, some varieties require partial shade to full sun, some need full sun to partial shade to full sun. It all depends on the type of hedge. Cherry laurels require partial shade growing conditions, whereas boxwoods need partial shade to full sun. 

  • Hardiness zone- The tendency of a hedge to give best results, also depends upon the hardiness zone. Talking about laurel hedge varieties both cherry laurel and english laurel are ideal for zone 6-9. But when it comes to portuguese laurel they are Ok in zone 7 too.Same thing is with arborvitae hedge variety Thujas and western red cedar are superheroes for zones 5-8, whereas american arborvitae is best for xone 2-8

  • Maintenance- hedges needs to be maintained with regular pruning, watering and mulching. There are some hedges which requires very less maintenance. Arborvitae requires less maintenance in smaller spaces. Whereas laurels requires hard pruning and regular watering to keep them beautiful

You must also finalize which hedge type you wanna go with. Evergreen or deciduous. If you go with deciduous then you would definitely experience leaves fall, whereas when you go with evergreen then congratulations they will promise to be with you for a long time or may be for a lifetime if precisely maintained.
